Astoria by Sherway Gardens

Last week I visited Astoria, a shish kebob house in Mississauga near Sherway Gardens.
Back in May, we were meeting friends coming from Oakville so Sherway Gardens seemed to be the best meeting spot.If you have been following our Instagram posts, you know we love Mediterranean food!  After our visit to Greece last July we now have some pretty high expectations of Greek food.

Astoria has 4 locations in and around the city (Newmarket, Vaughan, Mississauga and Toronto).  The Sheway Gardens location is great for me because then I can just pop over to the mall right after and get my errands done.  With the holiday season approaching I think I will be frequenting this area quite a bit.

I’m all about hospitality and appreciate great customer service!  As soon as we walked in we were greeted by the General Manager personally,  we asked to be seated in an open space because we have strollers, car seats, baby bags, etc. The staff were very attentive to our needs and accomodated us effortlessly.

Not only do they have tons of space inside but also outside, check out the patio area that would be so nice during the summer.

I love open concept kitchens, there is just something about watching your food being cooked right in front of you!

Check out what we ordered.

Appetizers

Grilled Calamari
calamari2

Contents: Cherry tomato salad with olives in a fire roasted vinaigrette dressing with mozzarella di buffalo and basil as garnish.

Tasty: 4 out of 5
Filling: 4 out of 5
Price: $14.49
Comments: I’m so picky about Calamari especially when its grilled because I don’t want the “fishy” smell and if the texture is too chewy, I get turned away.  Their Calamari was perfect.  It was lightly seasoned and extremely tasty.  You can taste the freshness and that’s what I loved!  I give this dish 4 Frequent Flyer Points.

Saganaki

flame

Cheese

Contents: Kefalotiri cheese pan-fried and set ablaze tableside OPA!
Tasty: 5 out of 5
Filling: Appetizer
Price: $13.99
Comments: Raise your hands if you could eat any type of cheese!  Both my hands are in the air.  This dish was all about the presentation, check out that flame!  The staff came and set the pan ablaze and yelled OPA in union as they served the dish with a side of bread.  Okay, I wanted another one.  This dish was so simple yet tasty.  They squeezed lemon on top of it which gave it the perfect zing.  I give this dish a solid 5 Frequent Flyer Foodie Points!

Greek Fries

Contents: French fries topped with crumbled feta cheese, tomato sauce and oregano
Filling: 5 out of 5
Tasty: 3.5 out of 5
Price: $7.79
Comments: These fries reminded me of “The Works” from New York Fries.  They were tasty but after being layered with the feta cheese and tomato sauce, the fries became a bit soggy.  We also waited to eat them with our mains so maybe we were also full from the other dishes.  I give this dish 3 Frequent Flyer Foodie Points!

Lunch Mains

Chicken Souvlaki

Contents: Tender marinated chicken breast grilled to perfection.  Served with steamed vegetables and roasted potatoes along with traditional Greek Salad (which we ordered on the side as extra)
Tasty: 4 out of 5
Filling: 5 out of 5
Price: small- $19.99 large $22.99
Comments: Who doesn’t love Chicken Souvlaki!  The chicken was nice and tender, very lightly seasoned and as you can see you get nice large portions.  The potatoes were cut a bit too big for my liking but the rest of the dish made up for it.  I could eat Greek Salad all day (we had 2 plates, yikes!).  I give this dish 4 Frequent Flyer Foodie Points!

Mousaka

Contents: Ground beef layered in eggplant, potatoes and baked under bechamel sauce, served with rice and steamed vegetables/Potatoes.
Tasty: 5 out of 5
Filling: 5 out of 5
Price: $17.99
Comments: Mousaka is usually a hit of miss, but this one was a hit!  It was flavourful and despite being a heavy dish, it was light and you can tell it was made with delicious, fresh ingredients and lots of love!  I give this dish a solid 4 1/2 Frequent Flyer Foodie Points!

Dessert

Baklava and Cheesecake

We just can’t rate these two items because they were phenomenal!

My Final Thoughts
I’m a big supporter of privately owned restaurants who pour their heart and soul into the food they make. Astoria hit it home on so many levels- from the food, hospitality, location, staff and the family feel!  Bonus points- there was more than enough space for two moms with two babies!

Our girls make it seem as if it’s so easy to dine with them, we should have taken some “behind the scenes pictures”.
