Hello Joe Bird, Hotspot on Lakeshore

Whenever I want to go downtown, the big debate among my friends and I becomes about where to go.  We want to find a hot spot that’s a mini escape from the suburbs and close by the water BUT we don’t want to pay an arm and a leg for parking and food!  So in summary, I hadn’t come across many places like this in Toronto until we walked past Joe Bird on the lakeshore!

Okay people, this restaurant was all of the above, and more!

Restaurant vibe:

The manager sat us on the patio overlooking the water and the boating docks.  We pretty much had the entire patio to ourselves.  Comfy lounge sofa’s, umbrellas, games and much more!  My friends and I are pretty competitive by nature so right before we ordered, we got in a game of brick Jenga and a good old sack toss.  Yup, I won the sack toss!

We worked up an appetite and ordered 3 dishes off the menu and all I have to say is “heaven”.  Guys, all three dishes were fresh, tasty, unique in flavour and nothing short of fabulous! OH- and very reasonably priced!

The Newton Salad with Chicken
Salad contents: Arugula, frisee apple, roasted sweet potato, pumpkin seeds, toasted coconut, feta, grilled chicken and topped with lemon dressing.
Price: $14
Filling: 5 out of 5
Tasty: 5 out of 5
Comments: this salad was extremely fresh and the grilled chicken was very tasty and cooked perfectly.  The salad dressing is what brought it all together. I give this dish 5 frequent flyer foodie points!

Bird Sandwich:
Sandwich contents: Your choice of fried or grilled chicken, pickles, slaw, tomatoes, swiss cheese, boston lettuce and garlic mayo on a bun.
Price: $7.00
Filling: 5 out of 5
Tasty: 5 out of 5
Comments: From the first bite, I fell in love!  I ordered the fried chicken and it literally melted in your mouth.  The slaw and pickles gave it that extra kick.  Each bite was finger licking good!  I give this dish 5 frequent flyer foodie points!

Bird & Malted Waffles
Dish Contents: Fried chicken with maple bourbon coffee sauce, chives, sour cream and slaw with waffles.
Price: $10.00
Filling: 5 out of 5
Tasty: 4 out of 5
Comments: The chicken and side was beyond tasty.  The batter on the chicken was not too thick and was perfectly cooked.  The waffles were light and were a great pair with the chicken.  I give this dish a 4 frequent flyer foodie points!

Homeade Corn Bread
Made with fresh corn & comes with Joe Bird’s signature jalapeno butter
Price: $5.00 (worth every penny)
Filling: Side for a dish
Tasty: an outstanding 5 out of 5!
Comments: Okay, I’m not a big fan of corn bread but wow, this delivers!  Every bite was fantastic.  This is a great side dish and quite honestly, you could order a few and devour them in minutes.  This is a MUST TRY on the menu!

Last but not least, DESSERT.  How does one choose?  The dessert section is in the corner of the restaurant and you can go up to the dessert bar and place your order there (just like an ice cream shop) or you can order at your table.  I thought this was smart as anyone who is walking the lakeshore boardwalk can order ice cream from Joe Bird and don’t have to sit in the restaurant to eat.

My top dessert picks:

Mango Wow: they serve actual mango’s!  I believe they pureed mango’s and then served it frozen.  Absolutely refreshing and healthy!
The Grasshopper: Okay I’m a sucker for chocolate so of course i ordered the Grasshopper.  I asked them to mix two different dessert cups together as their Smore’s dessert was sold  out but they still has marshmallow’s so they made me my own ice cream dish (The Grasshopper and Campfire Marshmallow).

My Final Thoughts

This restaurant was a great find in Toronto, especially for the summer.  Enjoy some great food, with some great company, with a great view and its reasonably priced!  Where can you get a burger for $7.00 nowadays right?  I loved the carefree atmosphere, the service and the menu was simple yet full of flavour.

I give Joe Bird 5 Frequent Flyer Foodie points!  The next time you’re in Toronto, make sure to give this place a visit. I’ll for sure be going back.
